Biography:

Melita Westerlund's art education began with a year at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Tunis, North Africa .  After returning to her native Finland, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki.  Melita received her MFA in sculpture from SUNY at Buffalo and then moved with her family to Bar Harbor.  There she established her studio where she has produced sculpture and cast paper art works for more than twenty years.  Her work can be seen in collections throughout New England.  Melita's large scale commissions grace many schools and public buildings in Maine and Massachusetts.  Melita is intrigued with various materials and her work in welded steel, wood, concrete and most recently, aluminum, reflects those interests.
