Internships Available
The Davistown Museum has 3 internships available for 2010. Each is approximately 8 weeks: May through June; July and August; September and October. The exact dates of these internships will be determined upon application.
An Internship includes the following: spacious fourth floor studio apartment with private bath and adjacent office space; shared use of 3rd floor kitchen and 2nd floor staff kitchen; access to and use of all libraries (4) and reading rooms (4); use of work and repair shops (1st floor - 3).
Duties
- Tend the visitors desk - take telephone calls, send and answer email, greet and assist visitors, provide Museum Mission overview and assist with access to exhibitions, library resources, and Maine Artists Guild Galleries
- Become conversant with local and regional history, and historical resources and issues
- Assist with research filing on Maine and New England maritime and industrial history, the history of ferrous metallurgy, and environmental history
- Enhance Museum public outreach and Tools Teach educational efforts via web site, local media, educational institution and other resource contacts
- Routine dust, sweep, and spiff, daily log, lights, opening, closing, etc.
Opportunities
- Experience the challenges of day to day operation of a small museum where the intern may be the only person on duty
- Hands-on study of early American, etc. tools, including preservation, cataloguing, storage, maintenance, and display
- Participate in the Center for the Study of Early Tools, explore the Museum libraries, tool identification resources, manufacturing history, tool types and eras, etc.
Other Information
- Interns will meet with the Curator for two hours every Saturday to discuss Museum missions, operations, exhibitions, research projects, Museum tour and visitor suggestions and feedback, and intern missions and questions
- Enjoy the ambience of the hill country of the Norumbega bioregion
- Participate in the Saturday 2:00 PM Curator’s Tour (a 15 minute overview of Museum missions, exhibitions, and local history, when scheduled)
- Use the overview information for any visitor contact/interaction
Participate in bi-weekly Saturday night pot luck suppers/meet other Museum and Liberty Tool staff, neighbors, and friends
