• A comprehensive review of the role of eastern Maine in the Revolutionary War, with a special focus on the role of Machias and its settlers in this conflict.
• Of interest is Ahlin's broad definition of the Sagadahoc: "Broadly interpreted it comprised all the land from the Penobscot River eastward to the obscure extremities of the Province of Nova Scotia, and in this study is often referred to as downeast.  'Downeast' is a term derived from an old sailing expression.  It applied when vessels sailing east from Boston sailed with the prevailing wind, or down wind.  In its broad sense it includes Nova Scotia as well as eastern Maine, but in this study will refer only to eastern Maine and its inhabitants." (pg. 158).
• "The revolution in eastern Sagadahoc was originally a rebellion of an active majority, resting upon a combination of area-based individualism and obstinacy shaped by the anti-British sentiment of more populous areas." (pg. 152).
• "Neither the Continental Congress nor the State of Massachusetts had the power to provide sufficient aid to Sagadahoc.  Even if military strength had been available, the supremacy of the British at sea was too much to overcome as this area was remote and isolated with overland transportation virtually non-existent.  Collier's smashing of Saltonstall's makeshift fleet convincingly demonstrated the British might in this area.  The seizure of Majabagaduce determined that the brunt of the fight be borne more completely than ever by the region.  Then a reduced number of rebels demonstrated their will by remaining undaunted.  Living from day to day, they paid dearly for time without surrender.  Ensuing days, weeks and months were finally to be weighed in favor of those downeast rebels who steadfastly believed the struggle to be worth their devotion and their lives." • Contains a wealth of information about the shipbuilder's of Waldoboro including an appendix of all the ships built in Waldoboro between 1783 and 1904.
• Biscoe's use of the date 1860 is misleading because the high point of the Waldoboro shipbuilding era is 1840 to 1857; Biscoe, in fact, includes the 1856 production statistics on page 4, the year in which Waldoboro Custom's District (30,000 tons built) was surpassed only by New York 49,000, Bath 50,000 and Boston, 62,000.

(pg. 184 - 185).
• "They fished from shallops, double-ended vessels about twenty feet long and measuring three to five tons.  The rigging usually consisted of either two masts with a square sail on each or one mast with a fore-and-aft mainsail and foresail.  Typically, the crew took along oars to supplement the sails, a compass, a bailing bucket, and anchors, or grapples." • If this text weren't so disorganized and poorly written, it would be listed as one of the primary state of Maine related histories.  Nonetheless, it is still an important source of information about the maritime history of Maine.
