A Penney & Thurston adjustable wrench has been stolen from The Davistown Museum in Liberty, Maine.

A $200.00 reward is offered for its return, identification and prosecution of the person who took it.

This item has been missing since 9/13/03 from the photography center of the museum, where it was waiting for photographs to be taken of it.  It is a very uncommon Penney & Thurston Company adjustable wrench, patent No. 44,653 issued Oct. 11, 1864.  It was described in the Nov. 26, 1864, Scientific American.  This wrench was made by a Maine company and is the only example that we know of in New England, although there may be a few in private collections.  It is made of drop-forged steel and is 8 3/4" long.  It is stamped with the mark: "PENNEY & THURSTON MECHANICS FALLS  ME PAT OCT 11 64".

Any information on the whereabouts of this tool would be appreciated; it is a significant loss.  Thank you for your help.
