Artist Biography

Douglas E. Wilson is an artist blacksmith who produces commissioned architectural, sculptural and functional work in forged steel. As a metalsmith since 1973, his work is included in numerous national exhibitions and publications.

In His Own Words:

The premise that art enriches our lives underlies my philosophy of creating art for individuals and public places. I believe that the spirit of humanity comes through the hands of makers of objects. The best of these objects, whether sculpture or functional works, can, when well conceived and well executed, illuminate the narrative of community; who we are, where we come from, what we believe in and what is unique or special about the place we call home. They can be anchors which help us remember who we are and where we are. They can help to hold community together. Finally, they can inspire us to make careful choices about our future.

I have lived and worked as a blacksmith on Deer Isle since 1981. I have made my living designing and making commissioned work; work that is invested with my vision and my sensibilities; work based upon my interaction with individuals and their environments.

Our Island community is rich in heritage and tradition. Skills developed here over generations inform and shape my work. Our rich natural environment supports and inspires me.

Participating artists donate 30% of MAG on-site sales proceeds to benefit the Davistown Museum. When we sell work that is exhibited on the MAG website but held elsewhere, we solicit a 10% donation. If the artist or another gallery sells the artwork, no commission is solicited or requested. We hope the MAG website exposure will help sell more artwork from the artists' own studios or in galleries which show their work.
