Steel, 4 1/2" long, signed "STARRETT ATHOL MASS NO. 494-D".
The buttons are "used for precision location of holes in a work piece. The hole is roughly located by normal layout methods, drilled and
tapped, and the button installed and snugged down. The button is then shifted to its precise location by measuring from other reference points
with the precision required. This procedure is usually done on a surface plate. It is then set up in the machine, usually a lathe or boring
machine, indicated, and final hole is bored. Frequently several holes would be bored in one piece, hence the need for several buttons."
